Detection of chondrocalcinosis by 7T MRI
7-Tesla MRI for Chondrocalcinosis Detection
Calcifications in knee cartilage can be detected with very high sensitivity in magnetic resonance (MR) images acquired at a field strength of 7 Tesla.
In case you need to know whether a patient has calcifications in their knee cartilage, menisci, or popliteal-artery walls, 7-Tesla MR imaging can likely provide the most authoritative answer – and without exposition to ionizing radiation.
A team led by Prof. Sutter evaluated, whether they could detect calcifications in 7T MR images as sensitively as in computed tomography (CT) images in 42 patients, who were known to have such crystalline deposits in their knee cartilage. In a subset of the study participants, they also compared the 7T images with images acquired at 3 Tesla.
They found that they could successfully identify all deposits visualized with CT in the 7T MR images, and, in fact, even more. They also found that they felt significantly more confident in identifying calcifications in 7T MR images compared to in 3T MR images and that the images of the calcium crystals where more sharply defined.
