The Balgrist Campus is a non-profit, tax-exempt institution that is entirely inspired by the musculoskeletal patient of today and specifically dedicated to the patients of tomorrow.
Patients, physicians, researchers and industry are brought together under one roof to address the unsolved problems and unanswered questions of the locomotor apparatus, discover the causes and mechanisms of our disabilities, and develop new successful treatment strategies, opening a door to better musculoskeletal health.
In 2016, three additional open research platforms, the Swiss Center for Musculoskeletal Imaging, the Swiss Center for Musculoskeletal Biobanking and the Swiss Center for Movement Analysis were added and laid the basis for recognition of the Balgrist Campus as a research institution of national relevance, recognizing the unique concept of open collaboration between patients, physicians, researchers and industry with the common goal of improving musculoskeletal health.
After a vague idea originating in 2007, the Balgrist Campus is born in 2009: Representatives of the ResOrtho Foundation (with its president Prof. C. Gerber) and of the Balgrist Association (President Eric Honegger and Vice president Robert Zingg) draft a concept. Thanks to a most gracious donation of Hansjoerg Wyss to the ResOrtho Foundation for the construction of a musculoskeletal research and development building, the planning can begin.
On Oct 1st, 2010 Balgrist Campus AG is founded. The ResOrtho Foundation holds 60 % and the Balgrist Association 40 % of the shares
In July 2011 Nissen & Wentzlaff Architekten BSA SIA AG Basel win in an open application procedure and are unanimously selected as general planners
In May 2013 the construction license is issued; the foundation stone is laid in September 2013
The erection ceremony takes place in August 2014
On 4/5 December 2015, the Balgrist Campus is officially opened by the former Federal Councilor Schneider-Ammann and in the presence of all benefactors, supporters, donors and political representatives.
In 2016 the Balgrist Campus is appointed as a research platform of national relevance by the Federal Government with the mandate to build and operate three open-access research platforms: Musculoskeletal Imaging, Musculoskeletal Biobanking and Movement Analysis
In 2018 the new technology platforms of the Balgrist Campus (co-funded and supported by the Swiss Federal Government) start their operations
In 2025, the Balgrist Association acquires 100 % of the shares of Balgrist Campus AG. ResOrtho makes a donation of 1.5 Mio CHF for the continued operations of the platforms of national relevance.
